For a midsize Chicago law firm, I’d shortlist these rather than hiring a generic web-design shop:
- AttorneySync — my first call. They work exclusively with law firms, are downtown at 211 W Wacker, and specifically emphasize firm ownership of the domain, content, data, CMS, and other digital assets. That’s important in a migration. Their reviews also mention responsiveness during redesign projects. Operation Technology
- Market JD, Inc. — another strong legal-specialist option downtown at 20 N Wacker. Their offering combines law-firm website redesign, responsive development, SEO and marketing. I'd put them on the RFP list if you want the new site to be a lead-generation tool rather than simply a visual refresh.
- Solid Digital — best non-legal-specialist option I'd consider. They're at 100 N LaSalle and have particular strength in strategic B2B website redesigns, UX, WordPress, CMS migrations, and making sites manageable for internal teams. ALL FOR™
- Clique Studios — worth considering if this is a larger, more strategic transformation rather than a straightforward redesign. They're downtown at 20 N Wacker and handle strategy, UX, engineering, CMS/platform work, accessibility and ongoing optimization.
- Americaneagle.com, Inc. — probably more agency than you need for a typical midsize firm, but a good candidate if you have a complicated CMS, integrations, multiple offices/practice groups, or substantial migration requirements.
One particularly interesting specialist
Hype Legal isn't one of the downtown results, but I'd seriously include them in the conversation. They have an actual Chicago law-firm redesign case study for Hart McLaughlin & Eldridge covering UX/UI, development, CMS implementation, SEO, site migration and CMS training—almost exactly your requirements. Hype Legal
What I'd ask for in the RFP
Don't frame this as just "responsive redesign + CMS migration." I'd require:
- URL-by-URL content inventory and migration map
- 301 redirect mapping and preservation of existing SEO equity
- Responsive/mobile-first design
- CMS that your marketing staff can actually maintain
- Reusable templates for attorneys, practice areas, offices, insights/news and landing pages
- Accessibility/WCAG work
- Analytics/Search Console preservation
- Forms and intake integrations
- Performance/Core Web Vitals optimization
- Staging environment and formal UAT
- CMS/editor training
- Post-launch monitoring
- Firm ownership of the CMS, hosting, domain, analytics, source code and content
The migration piece is especially important: changing CMS and URL architecture can damage search visibility if redirects, metadata, content structure and canonicalization aren't handled properly. SEO Design Chicago
If it were my project, I'd get proposals from AttorneySync, Market JD, Solid Digital, and Hype Legal. That gives you two legal specialists, a stronger general digital agency, and a particularly relevant legal case-study candidate—enough contrast to see whether the specialists are actually delivering something materially better.
If you tell me your current CMS, approximate page count, practice areas, and whether you want WordPress/Webflow/other, I can narrow this to the best 2–3 and give you a suggested budget range and RFP scope.
